The taurine reversal, explained

Few longevity stories have swung as hard as taurine's. It went from a landmark Science paper and a wave of supplement sales to a direct human contradiction in about two years — and the swing itself is the most instructive longevity lesson of the decade.
What the 2023 paper actually showed
The Science paper reported two things that got merged in coverage: taurine supplementation extended lifespan in mice, and blood taurine appeared to decline with age in humans. The first is a genuine animal finding. The second was the bridge that made the first feel personally relevant — if your taurine falls as you age, topping it up sounds like restoring something lost.
What the 2025 analysis found
A subsequent analysis of human cohorts with better measurement reported that circulating taurine does not reliably decline with age at all — in several cohorts it rises. If there is no age-related deficit, the 'restoration' framing loses its foundation, and the mouse result goes back to being what it always was: a mouse result awaiting a human trial.
Note what did not happen: nobody found fraud, and the mouse data still stands. This is the ordinary self-correction of science — which is exactly why buying supplements on a single season's headline is a poor strategy.
How our grade handles this
Taurine's lifespan claim grades as insufficient on our rubric: animal support, no human outcome trial, and a direct human contradiction of the premise. The grade will move the day a human trial reports — in either direction. That is the point of grading claims instead of writing reviews: the page updates with the evidence rather than with the news cycle.
