Taurine

Taurine became a longevity story overnight in 2023 when a Science paper reported that taurine declines with age and that supplementation extended lifespan in mice. The evidence has since evolved in a way worth watching: a 2025 human analysis directly challenged the premise that taurine meaningfully declines with human age at all.

Quick verdict

Mouse lifespan extension is reported; the human premise is now disputed. A 2025 longitudinal analysis found circulating taurine does not show the consistent age-related decline the supplementation argument assumed. No human trial has tested taurine for ageing outcomes.

Outcome mismatch. No human study linked to this claim measured lifespan. The available research measured surrogate biomarker instead.

The 2023 Science paper reported lifespan extension in taurine-supplemented mice alongside cross-sectional human associations. A 2025 human longitudinal study then reported evidence against the foundational premise, finding no consistent age-related taurine decline in people.

Why this grade — the appraisal in full

Too little credible research exists to judge the claim either way.

  • Strongest study design. Prospective cohort.
  • Human research volume. 1 human study, 0 participants in total.
  • What was measured. Human studies measured surrogate biomarkers only. A change in a marker is not by itself a demonstrated health benefit.
  • Replication. The supporting result has not been independently replicated in humans.

Limitations. The lifespan data is from mice. The human side of the 2023 paper was associative and cross-sectional, and has now been directly contradicted longitudinally — a live scientific dispute rather than a settled fact.

Taurine has a long history of use in energy drinks and clinical nutrition and is generally well tolerated at common doses. High-dose long-term supplementation for ageing purposes is untested.
