Taurine
Taurine became a longevity story overnight in 2023 when a Science paper reported that taurine declines with age and that supplementation extended lifespan in mice. The evidence has since evolved in a way worth watching: a 2025 human analysis directly challenged the premise that taurine meaningfully declines with human age at all.
Quick verdict
Mouse lifespan extension is reported; the human premise is now disputed. A 2025 longitudinal analysis found circulating taurine does not show the consistent age-related decline the supplementation argument assumed. No human trial has tested taurine for ageing outcomes.

- What was measured. Human studies measured surrogate biomarkers only. A change in a marker is not by itself a demonstrated health benefit.
- Replication. The supporting result has not been independently replicated in humans.
Limitations. The lifespan data is from mice. The human side of the 2023 paper was associative and cross-sectional, and has now been directly contradicted longitudinally — a live scientific dispute rather than a settled fact.

Taurine has a long history of use in energy drinks and clinical nutrition and is generally well tolerated at common doses. High-dose long-term supplementation for ageing purposes is untested.
