BPC-157

BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide fragment with a large animal literature on tissue healing and one of the largest gaps between internet enthusiasm and human evidence anywhere in the longevity world. It is not a licensed medicine in any country, and the products sold online are unregulated grey-market chemicals labelled 'for research use'.

Quick verdict

A consistent rodent literature suggests accelerated healing of tendon, muscle and gut injuries. A 2025 systematic review of its orthopaedic use found no randomised human trial has ever been published. Every human-effectiveness and human-safety claim made for BPC-157 is currently unsupported.

In rodents, this claim has real support: studies report faster histological and biomechanical recovery of injured tendon and muscle. In humans it has never been tested in a controlled trial — which is the entire story of BPC-157 in one sentence.

Why this grade — the appraisal in full

Evidence comes from animals, cell cultures or modelling. No human trial has tested this claim. Animal lifespan results do not establish human benefit.

  • Human evidence. No human study has tested this claim. Evidence comes from 1 animal study and 0 laboratory studies.
  • Translation to humans. Results in animals frequently fail to reproduce in people. A lifespan effect in mice is not evidence of a lifespan effect in humans.

Limitations. The animal literature comes largely from a single research network, and rodent tendon injury is an imperfect model of human injury. No human randomised trial exists on any endpoint.

A 2025 systematic review searched for clinical evidence behind BPC-157's growing use in sports medicine and found no published randomised human trial. The confident dosing protocols circulating online are extrapolated from rodent work and anecdote, not from human data.

  • What was measured. 1 human study measured a clinical or functional outcome rather than a laboratory marker alone.
  • Replication. The supporting result has not been independently replicated in humans.

Limitations. The absence of trials is itself the finding: use in people is running years ahead of any controlled human evidence.

Safety and interactions

Insufficient long-term safety data

No controlled human safety data exist. Grey-market peptide vials carry the additional risks of unverified identity, purity and sterility — a concern that applies to injected products in particular. Several sporting bodies prohibit it.

Regulatory and availability. Not licensed as a medicine in the UK or anywhere else. Products sold online as 'research chemicals' are outside medicines regulation entirely — no manufacturing, purity or dosing standards apply to them.

Falsifiability

What would change our view

A published randomised controlled human trial on any healing endpoint — none exists. Independent replication of the rodent findings outside the originating research network would also strengthen the preclinical case.
