Creatine vs collagen: which powder actually earns its place?

Creatine and collagen sit side by side on the shelf and in shopping baskets, but they are answers to different questions: creatine is a strength-adaptation aid with decades of sports-science trials; collagen is a skin-and-joint supplement whose best evidence is instrument measurements. Comparing them honestly means comparing jobs, not just grades.

Narrower single trials suggest benefits for activity-related joint pain and for training-related muscle gains in elderly men. Nothing links collagen to lifespan, and most supporting trials are industry-funded.

The honest verdict
For ageing muscle and strength — the outcome most tied to independence in later life — creatine plus resistance training is the better-evidenced purchase, and cheaper. Collagen's best evidence is for measured skin elasticity, with thinner single-trial support for joint comfort and training gains; notably, no trial shows collagen outperforming ordinary protein for muscle.
Neither has any lifespan evidence, and both markets stretch narrow findings into anti-ageing language. If forced to keep one for healthspan: creatine — because its endpoint, strength, is the one that predicts how ageing actually goes.
